This disc contains an electronic version of the SIGGRAPH 95
Conference Proceedings. All of the contents of that book are
in the disc, along with additional information provided by the
authors and some tools to use in viewing the disc's contents.
At the top level you will find several files or directories. Their
names and contents are:
APPS -- directory
Contains two subdirectories:
ACROBAT: Adobe Acrobat releases, with two subdirectories:
ACRO_V1: Adobe Acrobat reader release 1.0 for DOS and Solaris
ACRO_V2: Adobe Acrobat reader release 2.0 for Windows and
Macintosh
QUIKTIME: QuickTime 2.0 for Windows and Macintosh.
The Windows version comes in both a runtime and a full
installation version
Each of these systems is an installation package, and each
has a readme file that will guide you through the installation
process.
CONTENTS.PDF -- file
This file contains the Table of Contents of the disc, with each
paper's entry in the Table linked to that paper's PDF version on
the disc. That is, after you have installed the Acrobat Reader,
use it to open this file and then when you click on a paper's name,
that paper will open up.
However, if you are using the Acrobat 1.0 reader, these links will
not work; you will need to go to the individual paper (see the
notes on the PAPERS directory below) and open it individually.
COVERS.PDF -- file
This file contains the front cover, cover image credits, and back
cover of the conference proceedings in full color.
OTHERS.PDF -- file
Each conference proceedings has a lot of information in it besides
just the papers and the panels statements. This file contains all
that information: the awards statements, preface, and various
lists of conference and organization volunteers are found here.
PANELS.PDF -- file
This file contains all the panels statements from the conference
panels program, just as they are presented in the book.
PAPERS.PDF -- directory
This directory contains a subdirectory for each paper in the
conference. The directory for an individual paper is named for
the first author of the paper, so that (for example) the paper by
Carole Blanc and Christophe Schlick is listed in the directory
named BLANC.
Within each directory you will find at least a PDF version of each
paper that can be read by the Acrobat Reader. Most directories will
also contain additional materials such as TIFF files for the figures
in the paper, QuickTime or MPEG files for animations that accompany
the paper, or other materials. Please browse these materials well;
they are one of the primary reasons why we publish the CD-ROM and
not just the printed book.
Many of the authors have given us information about the paper or
about the other materials in their directory. This has been put
into a READ_ME file for the paper. Because of the differences in the
way different systems handle text files, there are two flavors of
READ_MEs: READ_ME.TXT, with a CR/LF at the end of each line, and
READ_ME.MAC that fits Macintosh computers better. For DOS/WINDOWS
systems, the .TXT file should work well.
If you do not have the tools to view these figures or movies on your
computer, there are some additional tools you might get to help you.
These include:
To read the PDF files:
The Aladdin GhostScript program will allow you to view PDF files
a page at a time on most workstations. This application can be
downloaded from
ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ghost/aladdin
To play the movies:
To play a QuickTime movie on a workstation, use the application
xanim, available by anonymous ftp from
ftp://ftp.portal.com/pub/podlinpec/xanim26978.tar.Z
ftp://ftp.portal.com/pub/podlinpec/xanim26978.tar.gz
To play an MPEG movie on any machine, see the MPEG FAQ file that can
be found on rtfm.mit.edu; this FAQ will list the latest MPEG players
for all major platforms.
To see the TIFF images:
There are a number of shareware TIFF players available. Some of them
may be downloaded from the networks and some are readily available
from other sources. Remember that shareware is not freeware; if you
find that shareware is useful, you should pay the author the licensing
fee to use it. Of course, commercial systems such as PhotoShop will
also let you view these image files quite well.
